When it comes to new construction or remodeling projects, the finish work is what truly brings everything together and gives a space its unique style and character. A fresh coat of paint can go a long way toward updating or personalizing a room. Here are a few tips for a professional finish.

A Sleek, Modern Finish

For any painting project, sprayers are my go-to for large surfaces. These, however, can be cost prohibitive for a DIY project. But don't worry! If you want to give your trim, doors, or windows a fresh, modern look, you can still get a super smooth finish with just a brush and a mini foam roller. Here’s how:

  1. Cut in with a brush: Start by using your brush to cut in around the edges and details, like the profiles on your door face. The brush will let you get into those tight spots that a roller just can’t reach.

  2. Then back-roll with a mini foam roller: Immediately after you’ve brushed the area, use your mini foam roller to gently roll over it. This smooths out the paint. It's key to getting that sleek, even finish. While it won’t be as perfect as spraying, it’s pretty close!

The trick is to work in small sections and make sure you’re back-rolling before the paint dries to avoid brush strokes. Depending on where you’re painting (indoors or outside), and the temperature and humidity, paint can dry in a few minutes or just a few seconds. The faster you roll, the smoother the finish.

Matching Older Brushed Trim

If you’re trying to match older, brushed trim, no worries! It’s actually pretty simple. The secret is in the technique and the tools.

  1. Use a quality brush and paint: The better the brush and paint, the smoother the finish. Start by cutting in around your trim and profiles, then use the brush to cover the entire surface.

  2. Keep your strokes even: It’s all about consistency. Brush over the surface with smooth, even strokes to achieve that classic, uniform look of older trim.

Bonus Tip: Prep Work is Key

Your paint is only going to look as good as what you are painting. Learning to prep right is key! Fill any nail holes and scratches and sand them smooth. Repainting trim? Make sure to check the caulking. Over time caulk lines will crack as the structure settles and moves with the seasons. Reapply caulking where needed before painting trim and it will look more seamless.
